Technical committee for digitalisation

Aims & Tasks

The working group was created from the VBW expert group to promote the use of modern data processing technology in the European inland navigation. They met for the first time mid-1996. In the first phase of their activity, they had set a target to reduce the deficits and reservations towards the use of this technology. The presentation of the different uses and its benefits, especially the systems BICS, ELWIS and ARGO, in the brochure "Heading for the future by using the computer" edited in 2000 have shown positive effects.

In the current phase, the group deals with the AIS and RIS systems, their development and operation in practice. Furthermore, the use of telematics applications for transport and transportmanagement play an important role in their work. Both the view of river headquarters as well as the wheelhouse are taken into account.

The working group is concerned with the latest telematics applications and the resulting new ways of working which guarantee a high topicality anytime.

Structure & work methods

The working group is international and open to participation by representatives of all European states as well as for an expansion of its technical platform. In addition to inland navigation it aims at integration of its logistical partners and all navigation-affine areas particularly shippers, ports, navigation administration (Schifffahrtsverwaltung), freight exchanges as well as software developers.

The group is open to a broadening of its professional platform.
